Bad reviews for Shizucor.com

I submitted my new design to the Perfection Gallery last Monday and got my results today. Unfortunately, I was not accepted and for good reason. I read the reviews and I must say, I feel quite inadequate at the moment. There’s one particular review that struck me the most:

This has the potential to be a decent design, but she lost it starting with the pixelly flower in the header, then that drab background, the weird navigation and hovers and the layout of the content. It’s like she tried to go Web 2.0 with the Shizucor title with the shiny dropshadow and whatnot, but she completely lost if after that.

I don’t like the rounded edge bit she has going on all over the place.

I don’t like the serif fonts for entry titles and such. She’s got sans-serif everywhere else so the serifs look out of place. The content in the boxes in the main area needs some more padding on the top and bottom. I don’t like the purple she’s using for links. I don’t like the calendar date things (because of that purple and because you can barely read the light green on blue).

I don’t understand why the sidebar doesn’t extend over to the right edge of the header and footer. It’s about 20 pixels off. That light green over there seems way out of place. It causes your eye to go straight to the sidebar rather than the real content. The overall layout of content in the sidebar is cluttered, and as usual, I have to complain about the default bullets. Ew.

That’s one really sad footer.

This is a definite no from me. It’s way too cluttered, and after having a look at some of the other sites she’s created, I’m not confident in her “design skills” at all.”

Phew!

I’m pretty much done with the new theme. There are files that still need to be worked on but I never use them but I should finish them anyway and there are things that I may have to tweak.

So, here’s my current to do list:

• Get Mootools to work in Wordpress
• Get asides to appear in the sidebar OR get twitter tools to work
• Check browser support
• Validate everything
• Add an accessibility notice
• Beautify the search form *edit*
• Get over PMS

If you guys happen to see anything wrong with the new layout please do tell me. It’ll be a great help. Also, if you’re using a browser other than Opera 9 please tell me if it looks weird in any other browsers. I’ve checked the layout on the latest Firefox and IE 7 and and everything looks good, so far. Thanks a bunch!

Aplus is now Shizucor’s new host!

I’ve finally moved and the transition was not as hard as I thought it was going to be. Even Wordpress wasn’t hard to transfer. So far, Aplus is a lot better compared to Brinkster. It is definitely what I’ve been looking for in a good host. I got a good deal too but it seems that I may have gotten more space than I need but the price was awesome! With that said, I’m looking for [edit]hostees! If you happen to read this and are interested, just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you!

Currently, I’m working on Walker’s Drug Store website. Because Johnny is away, work on JOTS has been put to a halt but I should get back to working on that this coming week.

It’s been awhile.

Oy! It’s been an interesting ride with Johnny on the Spot. The most difficult task was finding printers and making sure the format of my artwork is acceptable by printing companies. I’ve found the printers that I want and soon, I’ll be finished with the printed products. That last thing I want to battle is the website, which brings me to my next topic…

I’ve found out that my home network is somehow blocking me from my own site. Why would it do this? I don’t get it. I could do tons of research on this subject but alas, I have better things to do right now. I’ve found a new host for me and it seems to be an improvement compared to Brinkster. It’s going to be a troublesome task but I need to get it done within this month.

In other news, Colin and I visited his family in SC last weekend. It’s been a long time since he’s seen them and I’m sure they’ve missed him very much. I must say, I love his family. I feel most comfortable around them. Ooh, Colin got a chance to celebrate Passover with them (I was not able to go because of work :-{ and yes, he is Jewish by ethnicity but it is not his religion). Back in Charlotte, Colin and I have decided to move out of our current apartment to a location much closer to work and school. It’s a slight upgrade and I’m sure pretty sure the area will be safer although where we live now isn’t pretty bad either.

The last thing I’d like to do is apologize to all the people I’ve not talked to in a long time. It seems communication is not my strongest point. The best way to contact me is by e-mail: corid[@]bellsouth.net I’m hoping to be seeing the people I’ve missed for so long. :-)

Fini!

I’ve finally finished my first pixel art piece. It took me almost a month but that’s because of long pauses and work. I’ve submitted this piece at PixelJoint and am awaiting for my work to get ripped apart. Although, it’s not much to criticize. *shrug Well, I do hope people enjoy it. More will pixel art will be coming. Yeah!
