Daily Photo, Design & Drawing For 2010

I just recently read an article over at Smashing Magazine titled Design Something Every Day! written by Jad Limcaco. He challenges us designers, artists, photographers, writers and even developers to design or create something everyday for at least 15-20 minutes starting 2010. I think this is a wonderful challenge!

This year, I occasionally created something for fun and practice but I feel like I need to do that more often! For 2010, I’ve decided to do 3 different things:

  • Participate in Project 365: I’m no photographer but I still enjoy snapping pictures.
  • Draw something everyday
  • Design something everyday

Ideas

  • I’d like to improve my knowledge of anatomy so I’m going to draw a body part for a whole week once a month.
  • Draw a small object from life
  • Draw a pose from PoseManiacs.
  • A popular suggestion: Design a typography poster using a quote.
  • I love Jessica Hische’s Daily Drop Caps and I love pixel art so I’m planning on creating small pixel letters (hopefully) as beautiful as Jessica’s!
  • With regards to web design, I’m thinking of designing a business card site in different styles like grunge, minimal, retro and so on.

Those are just a few ideas I have in mind. Please help a girl out and suggests some design and drawing activities!

Resources

If you’re taking on this project but have no idea what to do, by all means try my ideas. Below are a few websites to help and inspire you:

Are you going to challenge yourself to create something everyday? Have you done something like this before? If so, how successful were you in keeping up?

New Pixel Art: 8 Color Belly Dancer

I decided to start creating pixel art a bit more seriously – again. The logo I created awhile back was a lame attempt and I mean to update that sometime. I thought it’d be a great way to get back into pixel art by participating in last week’s Pixel Joint challenge. The requirements:

Canvas size:
Exactly 150 width x 50 height
Colors:
Exactly 8

Other requirements were no transparency and no animation. The theme was music – we had to pixel someone listening to music. I thought creating an image of a belly dancer was perfect. It’s kind of a self-portrait because whenever I listen to belly dance music, I start dancing – even in my chair. Plus, I have aspirations of becoming a performer.

Anyway, here are the different phases:

New Pixel Art

I wanted to participate in a PixelJoint challenge because it seemed easy enough to do within a week. I’m still very much a pixel art newbie so I did something simple for my submission:

khorin-logo

We were supposed to create a logo using our PJ usernames and were restricted to 32 colors, and a max height of 100 pixels. I was quite inspired by this masterful lettering by Alex Trochut. I basically started with a square and formed the letters within the box. I’m pretty happy with the letters, except for the “R”. I’m not quite sure how else to draw it, however.

Weekend Inspiration: Food Tease

I enjoy cooking with my husband. It’s one of the things that keep us close, so I was delighted to find a website dedicated to food adventures of a Canadian couple living in Texas!

Food Tease is a food blog which was originally created to keep friends & family updated on what the couple has been up to in Texas. You can really tell they love to eat and try new recipes or ingredients! In this blog, you’ll find videos of the process of creating a dish and great food photography.

The ingredients they choose may not be on everybody’s list of favorite foods (well, most are certainly not on MY list – chicken hearts, anyone?). You know what, watching their videos makes  me want to try ingredients I’ve never wanted to try. Now if only I can get my husband to try beef heart

Besides the awesome content which includes restaurant reviews, the design is fabulous as well. What can I say, I’m I love minimalist design! You really get a chance to focus on the quality content. Enjoy!

Do you have any food blogs you’d like to suggest?

Manga/Anime Style Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait I’ve been working on this for the past several days and I’m pretty happy with it. Of course, there is always something that can be improved so I’m open to critiques!

First, I started in my sketchbook drawing from a photo of me, scanned it to Illustrator and created the line art with the brush tool and the white arrow tool. Finally, I colored it in using Photoshop.
